Welcome back to the 2nd part of our interview with ZoeyRaven. In this interview we will be focusing on Zoey’s walkthroughs/guides and mods for a range of lewd games; looking into what it is like for Zoey to create them.
ZoeyRaven is probably one of the most well known walkthrough and mod creators, creating mods for games such as Now & Then and PDF Guides for games such as Exiles. He has written about 76 PDF Walkthroughs and created about 27 Walkthrough Mods. Zoey’s guides always focus on the harem path of a game, showing the player the most content possible – including content the player may have missed based on a choice they made.
Q: What caused you to start creating walkthroughs for lewd games?
A: Qleaf stopped, honestly that’s why I started. I asked him if he could show me a little bit about how he did his PDF walkthrough for Away from Home. This led to a few months of him basically teaching me everything he knows about renpy (I’ll never know as much as him), and me taking over the majority of his PDF’s. I wasn’t even sure I’d be any good at it or what it would become in the beginning. It started really simply though, and I took to it immediately.
Q: What is the hardest part when creating your walkthroughs?
A: That’s easy, how the game is coded. Are they making efficient use of variables, is the code itself efficient, or are there a bunch of things in there that simply don’t need to be. Ptolemy, and pretty much any game he is associated with, are the gold standards for coding in my opinion. It’s simple yet extremely effective. Everything that is there needs to be, and nothing more.
Q: Do you prefer writing the walkthrough PDFs or creating the walkthrough mods?
A: Both are good for different things. I enjoy doing mods for more simple games, and PDF’s for games that are more complex, because PDF’s can show paths in a way mods simply can’t. They can tell you what is coming, a mod can’t do that. But, a mod can manipulate code so you can see more of the game. Overall, PDFs are superior in my opinion though.
Q: Do you have a particular game that you enjoy creating a walkthrough for?
A: There are many, but as I mentioned before, Ptolemy’s stuff is probably the best.
Q: Do you have a particular game that you don’t enjoy creating a walkthrough for?
A: I’d prefer not to say. I will however offer this, there are a few games I picked up in the beginning I would have never done, knowing what I know now.
Q: Your mods mainly always focus on a harem route for a game, including showing scenes players might not see. Is there any particular reason for this?
A: Sure, I want the player to see as much of the game as possible. If you are using a mod, you have decided, in my opinion, that you are not going to play the game blind. So I just take this to the next level and completely open it up. That way they don’t have to rely on a cheat menu that could get them in trouble, or simply deal with altering points at all. I just code it for them.
Q: Do you see yourself stopping anytime soon when it comes to making walkthroughs?
A: No, I have had to cut back on my PDF’s, but I had so many of them it was just becoming impossible, even before I started work on the game. I’m just now starting to get to a more manageable workload, which was what needed to happen, or I was going to burn out on them.
Q: Finally, do you have anyone you want to thank for possibly helping you create these walkthroughs/mods, or just anyone in general?
A: Qleaf, I still say he’s better than me, I probably always will. Also, OscarSix helped me when I first started modding, but Qleaf lent his advice with that as well. I owe where I am now, very much to Qleaf.
Thanks again to ZoeyRaven for agreeing to this interview and for giving us an insight into their walkthrough/mod creation. ZoeyRaven did a previous interview with us about their game One Day At A Time, which you can read here. Please make sure you go support ZoeyRaven for the amazing work that he does.
