An Adult Comic Universe in a Visual Novel

Adult game developers usually hire artists for their game, or sometimes do their own artwork. They might ask for help with coloring and background art, although this can increase costs, and working in a team is not the same as doing art alone. The fact that a western style artist starts a visual novel based on a comic series is not a very common phenomenon, although in the Japanese segment, adaptations like these are not new at all.

Reinbach creates NFSW art and started a popular comic series called SWITCH. After he finished the original series, the universe he created continued in a new series known as This Romantic World, where we can see the same aspect of his universe in more characters than before.

The visual novel runs under the same title and the story is set between the two comic series in the This Romantic World timeline, and content is still flowing for the two projects. If we want to imagine this universe we have to picture a feel good graphic world where sex and humour are quite frequent and natural as taking a breath. There is a characteristic element in the story where different characters have imaginary daemon friends who try to help them. Conversations between humans and imaginary friends are a pretty entertaining part of this universe.

Compared to the comic series, the art from a technical standpoint is stepped up another level due to the platform of a visual novel. There are even animations in it, something that is quite rare if we speak about 2D art visual novels. Naturally This Romantic World is not perfect, as no game is. Compared against the comic, sex scenes are not so frequent and less detailed. In spite of it This Romantic World could be fantastic experience for the fans of comic series to enjoy and further explore this universe. This can lead to exploring a new genre If an adult comic fan has never heard about adult visual novels and adult games before. The question is that if somebody tried the game without background knowledge of the comic universe, whether they might be engaged or not. There is the chance that the adult gamer community will find the author’s other works because of the visual novel and then they become fans.

What can a visual novel do better than a comic?

decesions can lead scenes like this
  • Story is longer and more detailed
  • Characters are more deep this way because there’s time to expand their motives and background
  • More interactive; you can choose your acts and sentences as the protagonist, making the game a more personal experience
  • The larger world of the universe can be seen in a more detailed form, and if visual novel has sandbox elements, you can roam around in this environment and can really feel a part of this world

On the other hand I must mention that creating a visual novel is not easy at all for someone who do not know the adult game industry and development. So if you are a 2D artist and would like to start a visual novel without knowing this genre then first start to talk with adult game developers about game development. You really need to dig for information and prepare well before starting. If you can’t do it alone but you feel this is the next step for your art then you need a few people who can help. For example there is a community of adult game developers on the official LewdPixels discord server.

If you guys know similar examples like this in the adult game world, or you have a favourite adult comic series or 2D artwork series that you would like to see as visual novel, feel free to comment on our Twitter.

Remember when I found sexual adult game genre, a whole new world opened for me. As a fan, I started to handle it more like a hobby than casual fun. During the years I tried many games and found fantastic stories. I like to think that I've got good eye to sort out special ones from the many. Always try to be objective and not push my taste to everyone but also share my thoughts based on my experience.
